GIN CLASSICS

From the classic English Negroni to the pre-prohibition Clover Club to the American Martini.

 

These are a few of my favorites, which also happen to be some of the most famous cocktails of all time.

The proper union of gin and vermouth is a great and sudden glory;

it is one of the happiest marriages on earth,

and one of the shortest lived.

Negroni

Gin, Sweet Vermouth, Campari, Orange Peel

1 1/2 oz Gin

3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth

3/4 oz Campari

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled and under-diluted. Strain into a double rocks glass with one large cube of ice. 

Garnish with an orange peel. Express the oils from the peel, and place the it in the drink.

Martini

Gin, Dry Vermouth, bitters

& either: Lime, Lemon, Orange, Olive

2 oz Gin

1 oz Dry Vermouth

2 dash orange bitters

Place all ingredients in a mixing glass. Stir with ice until chilled and fully diluted. Strain into a martini glass.

Garnish with an orange twist (my preffered garnish).

 

You can also garnish with: a lime or lemon twist, or a green olive.

Clover Club 
(Pre-Prohibition Style)

Gin, Vermouth, lemon, raspberry syrup, egg white

1 1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Dry Vermouth

3/4 oz lemon juice

3/4 oz raspberry syrup

1 oz egg white (generally one egg)

In a cocktail shaker, add all ingredients and shake without ice for 30 seconds. Add ice and shake again for 8-10 seconds. Strain into a glass.

Garnish with lemon zest, and optionally - a dehydrated lemon wheel.

Last Word

Gin, Chartruese, Maraschino Liqueur, Lime

3/4 oz Gin

3/4 oz Green Chartreuse

3/4 oz Maraschino Liqueur

3/4 oz lime juice

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Shake with ice and strain into a glass. 

The original doesn't call for a garnish, but a Luxardo cherry would be a nice addition if desired.

Pink Lady

Gin, Apple Brandy, lemon,

honey syrup, grenadine, egg white

1 1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Apple Brandy

3/4 oz lemon juice

3/4 oz honey syrup

1/4 oz grenadine

1 oz egg white (generally one egg)

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and dry shake without ice for 30 seconds. Add ice and shake again for 8-10 seconds. Strain into a double rocks glass with a large cube of ice. 

Garnish with

Luxardo brandied cherries. 

Lucien Gaudin

Gin, Dry Vermouth, Campari, Cointreau, lemon twist

1 1/2 oz Gin

1/2 oz Dry Vermouth

1/2 oz Campari

1/2 oz Cointreau

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass. Stir with ice until chilled and fully diluted. Strain into a glass. 

Garnish with a lemon twist.

Bee's Knees

Gin, lemon, honey syrup, bitters, cherry 

2 oz Gin

3/4 oz fresh lemon juice

3/4 oz honey syrup

1 dash Lavender bitters

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Strain into a glass. 

Garnish with a brandied Maraschino cherry. 

Corpse Reviver #2

Gin, Lillet Blanc, Cointreau,

lemon, absinthe, lemon twist

3/4 oz Gin

3/4 oz Lillet Blanc (or dry vermouth)

3/4 oz Cointreau

3/4 oz lemon juice

2 dashes Absinthe

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice. Strain into a glass. 

Garnish with a lemon twist.
